WHAT IS FASTING?

Fasting is to voluntarily abstain from food, and sometimes other things, for an extended period to heighten our hunger for God. “Food” can represent anything that is holding you back. What do you “consume” in terms of social food, intellectual food, spiritual food, and emotional food? Are these things distracting you from your relationship with God? Are you relying on things that have nothing to do with God to get you through your day?

FASTING GOAL:

A Personal Encounter With The Living God “He must become greater; I must become less”. – John 3:30 “Be ye holy, for I am holy”. – 1 Peter 1:16 You may experience many benefits from fasting, such as cleansing your body, weight loss, daily discipline, and breaking addictions or habits, but the sole goal of fasting is to experience God and become more like Jesus. Right now your life may be all about you- what you want, when you want it, and how you want it. Imagine if you separate yourself from your perceived needs; you may recognize that you “need” those things less and hunger for God more.

FASTING PREPARATION

Prepare your heart: “When I wept and humbled myself with fasting, it became my reproach (rebuke)”. Ps 69:10 Be willing to hear what God says, and when He reveals what needs to change, be willing to change. Don’t continue to sin. What are the paths He wants you to walk? How much does He want you to pray and read His Word? Tell God that you surrender your life to Him and that you want more of Him and His way. Read Isaiah 58:6-12 to help identify why you are fasting & praying, and what you need God to do in your life. ( Verse 6: Deal with sin/heavy burden/oppression Verse 7: Need compassion for others/give Verse 8: To be encouraged Verse 9: Seek answer to prayer Verse 9b,10: Examine ourselves Verse 11a: Direction Verse 11b: Spiritual restoration Verse 12 : Revival)

Prepare your motives: Ephesians 1:3 says, “Praise be to God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ”. There are spiritual blessings assigned to us. We can never exhaust them! Who knows what God wants to reveal to you, or give you? Maybe He wants to bestow gifts such as wisdom, anointing, healing power, joy, or encouragement. When you eliminate the things that are keeping you from focusing on God, you make room for His Spirit to move and He can show you things about your life that you never knew. Pray and determine what the focal point of your fast will be. What do you need from God?

Prepare your schedule: Decide where you will meet with God, what and when you will eat, and how you will spend your time differently. Remember, the fast is about communing with God, so don’t fill your time with distractions that will keep you from feeling hungry. Create a plan and commit to spending more time with the Lord. Remember to journal. Write down what God is showing you throughout your 7-day Fasting and prayer journey.

Prepare your body: Everyone doing a physical fast should consult a physician first, if necessary. If you have medical issues, consider fasting TV or media. The point is that there is something God wants you to separate yourself from for 7 days so that you can focus on Him and see Him more clearly. Don’t cheat yourself by removing yourself from the fast entirely. Once you determine what kind of fast you will be doing, prepare. If you decide to eat only fruits and vegetables for your fast, shop and organize a meal plan. In the beginning you may feel sick as your body detoxes, but you’ll make it! This isn’t a mind game to see if you can survive eating less or not watching ESPN, but about experiencing God. Some people ask, “What does not eating have to do with my relationship with God?” Stop eating, focus on Him, and let’s find out.

TYPES OF FASTS

Complete Fast : Drinking only liquids, typically water and/or light juices. Broth or soup may be included as options.

Selective Fast : Removing certain elements from your diet, such as sweets, coffee, meat, etc.

The Daniel Fast : abstaining from meat, sweets, or bread; drinking water and juice, and eating a variety of fruits and vegetables.

Partial Fast (a.k.a. The Jewish Fast) : Abstaining from eating any type of food in the morning and afternoon. Fast during specific times of the day, e.g. 6 AM-3 PM, or from sunup to sundown.

Soul Fast : Common for those with health issues that prevent them from fasting food; and those wanting to refocus specific areas of life that are out of balance. Suggestions: abstain from social media, watching television, shopping, sweets, etc.

PRAYER AND FASTING DAY 1

Prayer Focus: LIVING A WHOLEHEARTED LIFE

Bible Verse:  Colossians 3:23-24 “And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the                             reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ.”

Standout Verses: Joshua 14:9, Psalm 119:10, Jeremiah 29:13, 1 Peter 3:12, Matthew 22:37-40, Deuteronomy 4:29

Prayer Guide: Lord, we choose to follow You wholeheartedly and not to lead a half-hearted life because You are our God Who gave everything for us.                           Help us not to compromise but instead to stand our ground and be concerned with the approval of God than that of anyone. Lord help                           us to set ourselves aside and recognize that what matters more is eternity and bringing others closer to God. Help us to focus our                                   hearts and our thoughts to the Lord alone.

PRAYER AND FASTING DAY 2

Prayer Focus: LIVING A SPIRIT-FILLED LIFE

Galatians 5:16-18 “Walk in the Spirit and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit                                   against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. But if you are led by the Spirit,                             you are not under the law.”

Prayer Guide: Lord, work powerfully within us to desire the indwelling of the Holy Spirit in us and invite His Lordship inside of us and the infilling of                               the Holy Spirit upon us. You gave us a helper in the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit points us to the truth which is God’s Word, to illuminate                             our minds and the truth will be revealed to us. May the Holy Spirit enlighten us to see heavenly realities behind these very visible                                       Words. The Holy Spirit show us that we’re sinners in need of a Savior. He does the conviction in our lives. He makes us aware of our                               sinfulness. He assures us that once we come to Jesus, we become children of God and He seals us and assures us that Jesus has                                 forgiven us from our sins and have an eternal life. Holy Spirit, lead us in life. Help us to discern wether the things we hear are from God                           or not, and help us to pray what to pray. We desire that we are to be filled, refilled, and filled again with the Holy Spirit.

Help us to do your will from our heart, that we will                               be passionate in our want to do the will of God. Lord, make us to do your will our joy, make your Word our joy, make righteousness our                             joy, and make our obedience our joy. May our steps be ordered by God, walking in the heart of God and in the Spirit of God, following                              God’s appointed steps for us leading into the fullness of Your kingdom.

May You keep us strong and help us to reject the advances of Satan. May the                                         evidence of genuine salvation from God which is the transformation of our inner person as a new creation with a new heart, new                                     affections, new law, new love, will manifest in our life. May God bless us with the reality of that personal relationship with Him. That is                             loving God, loving the law of God, fearing God, worshipping and praising God, and walking in joyful obedience in God (not grumbling).

May we fix our eyes on Christ alone, the author and perfector of our faith. We allow the Holy Spirit to intercede for us and to pray in the Spirit. May our body, soul, and spirit be fully immerse, surrendered, and completely focused on the presence of God. True prayer in Spirit begins in union with God and with bending our will to the will of God. May we position ourself to receive from God the blessing that comes through our believing. Help us to stand and live as an overcomer everyday, prepared for battle in our daily walk.

PRAYER AND FASTING DAY 7

Prayer Focus: LEARNING HOW TO GIVE

Bible Verse: Luke 6:38 “Give, and it will be given to you; good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom.                        For the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you.”

Leviticus 27:30 “And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land or of the fruit of the tree, is the Lords. It is holy to the Lord.”

Standout Verses: Malachi 3:8-11, Matthew 6:19-20, 1 Chronicles 29:11-14, Proverbs 3:9-10, 1 Corinthians 16, Ezra 2:68-69, Deuteronomy 14:22-23                                        Deuteronomy 16:17 Acts 20:35

Prayer Guide: Lord, help us to recognize that nothing is ours, that everything we have is really Yours. Everything comes from You, and we have given                             You only what comes from Your hand. Give us a heart that trust in Your provision, and love and a heart that is thankful for Your                                         provision and help. Make us to be perfect in our tithing and excel in the grace of giving. May we see giving of tithes, love offerings, and                           love gifts to be an opportunity for us to express our gratitude and faith regarding all that You have given to us. Make us to give our                                   tithing faithfully, cheerfully, and not grudgingly. We believe and are convinced that the Lord honors those who honor Him. As the                                       Scripture teach us, the windows of heaven will be open for us. May You put it in our hearts that when we give our tithes, we are                                         obeying your commandments, and it helps us to keep all the other commandments, because it helps us to control our own                                               materialism and desire only to lay up treasures in heaven. It allows us to have a Spirit that reminds us that everything we have is really                           the Lord’s. May we continue to observe carefully and diligently the Lord’s command because our obedience always leads to blessing.                             Lord, may You work through our giving to honor Jesus Christ, to fund Your work for the advancement of Your Kingdom and for                                         blessing Your people.
